Stilt House

Simon's Town, Cape Town

Brian Bernhardt Architects

Located on a north-facing fynbos mountainside overlooking False Bay, the existing stilt house was extensively remodelled and extended to accommodate the client’s growing family while strengthening the relationship between the living spaces and the surrounding landscape.

The alterations included a complete reconfiguration of the upper floor, with new bedroom accommodation, improved circulation, and an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. A new lower level was constructed beneath the existing house, providing a self-contained studio apartment, additional service areas and direct access to a partially enclosed terrace with panoramic views across the bay.

Sustainability formed a central part of the design. A borehole and water-purification system were installed alongside a roof-mounted solar array with inverter and battery backup, enabling the house to operate with minimal reliance on municipal services.

The project was completed with extensive landscape works, including curved retaining terraces, indigenous fynbos planting, a freshwater pool and a timber viewing deck carefully integrated into the mountainside.
