Terraced Courtyard House

Southern Johannesburg

Jo Noero Architects · 1987–1995

Built on a north-facing slope in southern Johannesburg, the house is organised around a clear hierarchy of spaces, progressing from the public arrival area at the top of the site to the private bedrooms below.

Visitors arrive beneath a shaded pergola incorporating guest parking and a three-car garage. A staircase in the corner of the garage leads to an intermediate L-shaped level.

This level contains the kitchen, living and dining spaces, which open onto a generous, sheltered pool terrace with braai facilities. A carefully positioned slot opening in the north-facing wall frames views towards the distant suburbs while creating a visual connection with the U-shaped bedroom wing and lower terrace containing a central koi pond.
